World War II Project: Year 3

Haydn Primary School, Nottingham

In September 2007 I begin training as a primary school teacher. As a pre-course requirement I needed to do 10 days volunteer work in school.

I had the great privilege of leading the design and technology sessions with year 3 at Haydn Primary. The following pictures are some of the work that the children produced

The aim of the project was to introduce the children to the way people lived during the second world war. They experienced an air-raid and spent time in a local shelter, they were 'evacuated' and had lessons conducted according to the methods used in the '40's. They also had to make toys to play with. We made papiermache Spitfire planes and peg dolls, using cardboard boxes and newspaper and dolly pegs and rag bag materials.

I owe a huge debt to the British Spitfire Society who provided me with the plans for a paper version of both the Spitfire and the Hurricane.

I owe an even bigger debt to the enthusiasm and hardwork of year 3. They surpassed all expectations.
